Ole Miss recruiting 2013: Rebels’ success on the trail continues

Ole Miss is following up a big 2013 class with another quality haul, led by multiple four-star prospects.

Spruce Derden-USA TODAY Sports

Hugh Freeze made a huge splash in the last recruiting cycle, landing a top-10 class that included the nation’s No. 1 player, Robert Nkemdiche. Freeze and his staff have kept the momentum going, and their 2014 group currently ranks 13th nationally and fourth in the SEC, according to the 247Sports composite.

Many of the Rebels’ 21 pledges came early on, and they haven’t picked up a verbal since three-star kicker Gary Wunderlich joined the class in mid-August. Here are some of the top names in the class:

Roderick Taylor is a consensus four-star offensive guard from Jackson (Miss.) Callaway High School. As the consensus No. 46 overall player in the 2014 class, he is Ole Miss’ top-rated high school commitment. Taylor is the No. 2 player at his position and the top player in Mississippi.

Andy Bauer, a four-star tackle from St. Louis (Mo.) DeSmet High School is the second piece of a headlining offensive line haul. He is the No. 7 OT in the nation, as well as the 67th-best overall player in the class.

The Rebels scored another big in-state victory with the addition of Meridian (Miss.) Meridian High School safety C.J. Hampton. Hampton is a consensus four-star prospect and the No. 8 player at his position. Taylor and Hampton give Ole Miss the top two players from Mississippi.

Jeremy Liggins is an athlete/defensive end prospect from Booneville (Miss.) Northeast Mississippi Community College. The four-star recruit is regarded as the top junior college athlete in the class, and a top-20 junior college prospect overall.

Ole Miss plucked four-star outside linebacker Demarquis Gates out of Hampton (Ga.) Lovejoy High School. Gates is the No. 26 player at his position and ranks 292nd overall. He’s also a top-25 player from the state of Georgia.

On target

Ole Miss is still focused on adding some top defensive playmakers.

Nyles Morgan, a top linebacker from Crete (Ill.) Monee High School, seems to be favoring Ole Miss over Vanderbilt. Ole Miss still has a shot at Tucker (Ga.) High School defensive tackle Elisha Shaw, a fellow four-star. And four-star Stockbridge (Ga.) cornerback Kendarius Webster is also very high on Ole Miss.

While Ole Miss won’t have the same level of recruiting class it did in 2013, its 2014 class could still be one to advance the program within the ACC.
