Jonathan Lockett recruit scouting report: Natural cornerback

Lockett is an excellent cornerback recruit. Here is our scouting report of him.

Bud Elliott

At 5'11, 170 pounds, California cornerback Jonathan Lockett is regarded as a four-star prospect in 24/7Sports' composite team rankings. He's viewed as a top-250 recruit nationally and one of the top-25 players from the state of California in the 2014 class. In addition to giving USC and Washington serious consideration during his recruitment, Lockett also unofficially visited Oregon and held scholarship offers from just about every prominent school on the west coast.

You can follow Jonathan on Twitter: @Jlock_21. Here are some highlights of Lockett in action:

Derrell Warren, West Coast Recruiting Analyst: Lockett has decent height for a cornerback and carries a relatively sturdy looking frame with room to carry additional weight. He could easily top out in the 190-pound range. His primary attributes as a corner are his quick feet and smooth hips. Lockett is not a freakish athlete in terms of measurable traits such as speed and overall size, but he carries excellent ball skills and transitions well out of his backpedal. This allows him to ‘lead the route’ as a receiver takes an outside release and run with them down the sideline on vertical routes.

From a coverage perspective, he seems most comfortable in off-man. He is an efficient mover who has the confidence to not prematurely open up his hips. He stays square and shows good route recognition which assists him greatly in being able to mirror receivers as they come out of their breaks and drive on the ball.

On tape he is rarely asked to press at the line. And although he flashes aggressiveness when playing the ball he doesn’t always play physically through the route. And though he does a good job gaining position prior to contesting passes in the air, one wonders how that will translate facing bigger, faster receivers who use their length to create airspace.

Lockett has really good awareness and does as good of a job as any corner I’ve seen at staying on top of as opposing receiver. He’s not necessarily the most explosive leaper, but times his jumps well and often times to the ball in the air before the receiver can.
