Joe Mathis signs with Washington: Huskies load up on defensive line recruits

Mathis is one of many highly-touted defensive prospects on their way to UW to help turn coach Steve Sarkisian’s defense around.

The Washington Huskies have been on the cusp of breaking through in the Pac-12 the past couple years. They are working to change that on the recruiting trail.

While the Huskies have had plenty of talent, they’ve seemingly been unable to take the next step against a couple of emerging programs in the North division. As National Signing Day arrives, UW’s coaching staff will let it be known they focused on defense this time around.

One of the top defensive line recruits in the country is Joe Mathis. Mathis, who hails from Upland High School in Upland, Calif., was one of the most sought-after defensive ends in the 2013 class. He and five other defensive line recruits should help give the Huskies a feared pass rush for years to come.

Ratings: Newby is a consensus four-star recruit. Rivals.com has him as the 161st best prospect in the 2013 class.

Vitals: Mathis checks in at 6’4 and 254 pounds. He has the size and quickness to be an early contributor in Seattle.

Other offers: Mathis has one of the most comprehensive lists of scholarship offers of any athlete in the country. In addition to just about every Pac-12 school offering him, SEC powerhouses like Alabama and Auburn also came calling.

Twitter: Joe can be followed on Twitter here: @jayy_smooth5

Recruitment timeline: Mathis originally committed to UW back in October 2011, as UW Dawg Pound detailed. He then decommitted from the program to reevaluate his options, but ended up recommitting to the Huskies on Jan. 5, 2013.
