Johnny Johnson signs with UCLA

UCLA cornerback Johnny Johnson is a new cornerstone in the Bruins’ secondary.

The UCLA Bruins are bringing in a trio of excellent safeties, but they are also bringing in a pretty excellent cornerback as well. Johnny Johnson is on his way to Westwood and is a key reason why UCLA has a top-rated recruiting class.

Here’s Bruins Nation on Johnson’s commitment.

Johnny is a huge get for the Bruins - not just his elite status but particularly as an elite defensive back that we are all too short on. He is rated as a 4-star recruit by all of the major recruiting services: Scout.com rates him as the #8 CB in the nation and the #78 overall prospect regardless of position. Rivals.com rates him as the 20th best CB in this year’s class, the #25 player in California and #210 nationally at all positions, while ESPN rates him as the #195 prospect in the nation and 19th best in California.

While Priest Willis, Tahaan Goodman and Tyler Foreman will aim to lock down the backline of the secondary, Johnson will likely end up at corner, responsible for locking down the outside against the top receivers in the conference. Johnson is probably going to have a chance to crack the two-deep as both starting cornerbacks are departing and both backups are only sophomores.

Ratings: Johnson is a consensus four-star cornerback.

Vitals: 5’10 175 lbs

Other offers: Johnson had offers from USC, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Stanford and a host of other schools.

Recruitment timeline: Johnson has had a pretty low-key recruitment. After taking trips to USC, Oklahoma, Washington and others, a few visits to UCLA locked him up for the Bruins.
