Davion Hall is one of the most versatile Texas recruits in the 2014 class, and the Texarkana (Texas) Liberty-Eylau High safety and wide receiver is attracting a lot of attention from major programs.
Davion Hall scouting report: Versatile 2014 safety/wide receiver
Davion Hall has already committed to the Baylor Bears early, although SEC and Big 12 schools are coming hot after the Texas athlete.
But Hall has already made the plunge and committed to the Baylor Bears early this February after the team’s Junior Day. Mark C. Moore of Our Daily Bears recaps the Baylor commitment and discusses how Hall will fit into the Bear offense.
Hall is considered a consensus four-star safety, ranking 126th nationally according to Rivals. Hall is the 96th nationally ranked recruit on the Top247 board for 247 Sports, and is also ranked as the 6th-best safety and the 10th-best Texas prospect. Ranked the 8th-best safety according to Scout, Hall is noted by ESPN for his versatility, playmaking and ball skills and has the ability to play either safety or wide receiver at the next level.

In the 2010 recruiting class, North Carolina product Keenan Allen was ranked as the no. 1 safety in the country by Rivals. Three years later, as Allen prepares to go high in the NFL Draft, it’s almost hard to imagine that he could have ended up on defense in college.
In watching film on Davion Hall, it’s easy to feel the same way. At a lanky 6’2 and 185 pounds, Hall is an inch shorter and 10 pounds lighter than Allen coming out of high school, so he’s not quite as physically imposing, but he does have the frame to eventually play at 200 pounds and looks like he could be a future star given the chance on offense.
As a receiver, Hall has the ability to lull defenders to sleep coming off the line of scrimmage before exploding into his route and passing deep safeties down the field. Catching passes, Hall both extends outside his frame naturally and attacks the football even when he could easily cradle it to his body. On short catches, he’s difficult to bring down because of his natural strength and willingness to fight for extra yards.
With the ball in his hands, Hall won’t be mistaken for a dynamic jump-cutting slot receiver, but he can stem and weave defenders with sharp, high speed cuts to maximize runs after the catch.
On the defensive side of the ball, Hall has the range expected of someone with his speed offensively and can support the run with aggression and wrap-up tackling ability.
Athletes the height of Hall can often transition more easily moving forward or sideways on the offensive side of the ball, it would seem that his greatest upside lies at receiver, though he does projects as an excellent defender as well if he ends up there in college.
However, Hall is unique in the sense that he’s fluid and flexible enough to play a safety position with heavy coverage responsibilities, despite his height.
In the end, whichever college program secures a signature from Hall won’t be able to go wrong whether he ends up on offense or defense.
