Vic Enwere commits to the Cal Golden Bears

The Golden Bears picked up a tough running back commit who could end up making the move to defense in college.

The California Golden Bears have been working to recruit the state of Texas in recent years and added a significant piece to their 2014 recruiting class with the commitment of Fort Bend (Houston) Austin running back Vic Enwere on Monday:

A consensus three-star prospect rated as the no. 63 running back nationally and the no. 103 player in Texas by the 247Sports composite ranking, Enwere is a 6’1, 210-pounder with strong athleticism that helped him earn a host of offers, including invitations to play at Michigan, Michigan State, Missouri, Utah, and Wake Forest, among many others. Ewnere’s finalists included Colorado, Michigan, SMU, Virginia, Missouri, and Kansas State.

The district MVP as a junior, Enwere racked up more than 1,600 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns last fall, though he also has an ideal frame to eventually reach 230 pounds, at which point it might make more sense to play him on defense as a linebacker. However, strong running back skills like good lateral quickness and jump-cutting ability and solid open-field speed that allows him to finish long runs in the endzone in high school all make him a candidate to stay on the offensive side of the ball in college.

The biggest area for improvement for Enwere regards his pad level -- he has a tendency to run upright, which negates some of his lower-body strength and tackle-breaking ability and will also expose him to more injuries as he makes the transition to college.

Enwere is the sixth pledge in the 2014 Golden Bears recruiting class and the second from the Houston area, joining Spring (Texas) Dekaney defensive end Isadore Outing.
