Jaleel Wadood commits: Top cornerback commits to Cal

Less than a week after decommitting from Arizona State, consensus four-star commit Jaleel Wadood has a new destination: He’ll join Sonny Dykes at Cal.

Tom Hauck, Student Sports

California defensive back Jaleel Wadood committed to Cal Tuesday at The Opening. Wadood is the Golden Bears’ ninth commit for the Class of 2014. He chose to commit alongside his high school teammate, Naijiel Hale, also an elite cornerback prospect, who chose Arizona.

Wadood is a consensus four-star prospect and is ranked as the No. 19 cornerback in the country by Scout. 247 Sports lists him as the nation’s 16th-best safety, and Rivals rates him as the No. 25 corner. ESPN rates Wadood as the 39th-best athlete in his class. Wadood becomes the second defensive back in Dykes’ second class as a new head coach in Berkeley. He’s the second four-star recruit in the class, alongside athlete Koa Farmer.

Standing 5’11 and weighing in at 170 pounds, Wadood has run a reported 4.5-second 40-yard dash. He had offers from 13 schools, mostly out west, and chose the Golden Bears over Arizona State, UCLA and USC. He had an SEC offer from Vanderbilt and a Big Ten offer from Nebraska.

The Opening is a gathering of the country’s top prospects at Nike’s headquarters in Beaverton, Ore. Wadood wasn’t able to participate in all of the drills at the camp, but did play in 7-on-7 ball.
