Jeff Tedford always recruited well at California, but was ultimately unable to translate that into consistent on-the-field success. His successor, Sonny Dykes, is looking to introduce the exciting Bear Raid offense while keeping up the recruiting expectations in Berkeley, and appears to be off to a good start so far.

The Bears’ class ranks 46th in the 247composite team rankings. That’s good for fourth in the Pac-12, and especially good when you consider they only have ten commitments in the 2014 class.
Their most recent commitment came in late August, when three-star Klein Collins (Texas) High School safety Jeremy Winchester pledged to the program.
Jaleel Wadood is one of the top recruits in the Bears’ class. The safety from St. John Bosco (Calif.) High School is considered a four-star recruit by the 247sports composite. He is rated as the 14th-best safety in the country and the 23rd-best player in the state.
Devante Downs is another good get for California. The outside linebacker from Mountlake Terrace (Wash.) High School is rated as a four-star by the 247sports composite. He is considered the 23rd-best outside linebacker in the country and the second-best player in the state.
Jalen Harvey is a big part of Dyke’s class. The wide receiver from El Cerrito (Calif.) High school is considered a four-star prospect by the 247sports composite. He is rated as the 40th-best wide receiver in the country and the 29th-best player in the state.
Top target
The top target for the Cal Bears is running back Joe Mixon. Out of Oakley (Calif.) Freedom High School, Mixon might instantly be the best player for Cal in 2014 if he signs. Oklahoma, and perhaps USC, will be tough to beat for Mixon.
