Wisconsin football recruiting: a big addition

With no new recruits, it wasn’t an exciting month for the Badgers...or was it?

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Through August, the Badgers have commitments from 11 players and a class that rates as 40th in the country by the 247composite. Thus far, new head coach Gary Andersen has the Badgers right in the middle of the Big Ten rankings, trailing Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Michigan State, and Northwestern.

New Badgers & top stars

Though Wisconsin hasn’t added any new commitments lately, they do have a big one -- by getting Madison (Wisconsin) Monona Grove’s Jaden Gault to become a Badger, Wisconsin scored their best recruit of the 2014 class to date. Gault, a 6’7”, 285 pound offensive tackle is the top player in the state, rated 4* (.9356) by the 247composite and among the top 15 nationwide at his position. Gault joins Jacksonville (Florida) Jean Ribault dual threat quarterback D.J. Gillins as Wisconsin’s only other composite 4* recruit.

Other highlights for the Badgers thus far include composite 3* guard George Panos and 3* defensive end Billy Hirschfield. Panos and Hirschfield are both high school teammates, hailing from Hartland (Wisconsin) Arrowhead. The Badgers also have a commitment from the 6’2”, 225 pound Taiwan Deal, a running back from DeMatha Catholic in Maryland.

Still to come?

Wisconsin has a few talented players in its sights.

First, Jeremy Patterson, a defensive tackle from Jesup (Ga.) Wayne County, seems to be trending to Wisconsin. The Badgers are also in it for offensive lineman Frank Ragnow, of Chanhassen (MN), though it is not clear where they stand v. the likes of Michigan State, Arkansas and Florida State. JUCO cornerback Demarlon Morris, of Arizona, is another option for Wisconsin. And running Quadree Ollison, of Buffalo (NY) Canisus, is a big bruising back over whom Wisconsin will fight Penn State.
