D.J. Smith commits to South Carolina

One of the nation’s top cornerback recruits will play his college ball for Steve Spurrier in Columbia.

One of the top remaining cornerbacks in the 2014 class has made his college pledge, as four-star cornerback D.J. Smith has committed to South Carolina.

A consensus four-star recruit, Smith is considered a cornerback by each of the three major recruiting services except for Scout, which places him at safety. Rivals rates him the highest, ranking him as their seventh-best corner in the class, but all four services think highly of him.

The 247sports composite, which aggregates the ratings from each of the four major recruiting services, considers Smith a four-star recruit. The composite ranks him as the 129th-best player in the class, the 12th-best cornerback and the seventh-best player from the state of Georgia.

Listed at 6’0 and 191 pounds, Smith attends Walton (Ga.) High School and hails from Marietta. He chose South Carolina over offers from Clemson, Tennessee, Georgia and Ohio State, among others.

It’s a nice grab for the Gamecocks, who had struggled in comparison to their SEC rivals on the recruiting trail. Smith is their second cornerback in the class, joining three-star Al Harris.
