Derrell Scott commits to Tennessee over South Carolina: Vols land speed back for their spread

Randy Sartin-USA TODAY Sports

One of the top running backs in the nation has made his college choice, as Derrell Scott has committed to Tennessee over South Carolina.

Listed at 5’11 and 180 pounds, Scott attends Havelock (N.C.) High School and hails from the city of the same name. A consensus four-star recruit, he is widely considered one of the top running backs in the class of 2014. 247Sports considers Scott the third-best all-purpose back in the country, Rivals ranks him as the ninth-best running back, ESPN slots him at No. 11 among running backs and Scout ranks him 17th in its running backs rankings.

The 247Sports Composite, which aggregates the ratings of all four major recruiting services, considers Scott a four-star and rates him as the 126th-best player in the class. He is also ranked as the third-best all-purpose back in the class as well as the sixth-best player in the state of North Carolina.

Scott will be able to receive some immediate playing time in Tennessee’s spread offense. He is electric with the ball in his hands, and is a quiet kid who works hard. His coach raved about him to SB Nation’s Bud Elliott over the summer.
