Jalen Greene recruit scouting report: Athletic dual-threat QB headed to USC

Student Sports

Consensus three-star quarterback Jalen Greene has ultimately landed at USC after some coaching changes altered his direction. He was initially committed to Boise State, but followed head coach Chris Petersen to Washington before flipping again in late December, this time to the Trojans. Greene is one of USC’s early enrollees. He also had offers from Colorado and Fresno State.

Greene attended Junipero Serra High School, which is not far from USC’s campus. The 6’3, 195-pound dual-threat is the consensus No. 13 at his position and No. 487 prospect overall. Of the major services, only 247Sports regards him as a four-star prospect; 247 has him at No. 10 among dual-threat QBs. Rivals has him at No. 14 among dual-threat QBs, ESPN has him 27th and Scout ranks him 44th among all quarterbacks.

As a senior, Greene threw for more than 2,300 yards, with 30 touchdowns against six interceptions. He also ran for 1,130 yards, scoring 14 touchdowns on the ground.

Derrell Warren, West Coast Recruiting Analyst (@yssd): Greene is a left- handed dual threat quarterback with plus level athleticism. At this stage in his development he is probably a bit further along as a runner than he is passing the ball.

As a scrambler he can create big plays with his legs when flushed from the pocket or use them to buy additional time before distributing the ball to his receivers. He is equally effective on designed runs. He carries great lateral agility and balance that allows him re-direct on the fly whether in the open field or in confined areas. He is a creative runner once he finds daylight.

Greene has quick feet in the pocket. He Smoothly pivots in the pocket as he goes through his reads. At this stage he probably has an average arm from a velocity and distance standpoint. He keeps his eyes downfield even after having to adjust in the pocket. He can smoothly scan-reset-scan- in the face of pressure, and delivers a nice, catchable ball as well.

As a passer Greene will drift backwards on a lot of his throws. He has a tendency to drop his elbow a bit once he sets up to throw. This creates a longer delivery and lowers his release point. Better weight distribution and elevation of his elbow will help him drive his throws. As he physically matures, the weight he projects to pack unto his frame will likely translate -incrementally at least- into additional arm strength as well.
