Although the 247sports composite says he is the top rated recruit among all players in the Hoosier State, wide receiver Justin Brent is far more than just that.
Justin Brent recruit scouting report: Reliable receiver
The wide receiver provides an interesting case, despite being a top player in state.
The 6’3, 190-pound wideout compares quite favorably with those of his out-of-state competition, as well -- the 247sports composite places Brent in the top 15 among all wide receivers, and at 94th among all players in the class of 2014. Rivals and 247sports both like Brent quite a bit -- the former ranks him at 82nd among all players, while the later places him even higher at 58th overall. ESPN, on the other hand, sees Brent as a fringe top 300 player, which weighs down the average a bit.
Even though Brent has tremendous talent, he has only two FBS offers, which is quite odd, all things considered. Only Notre Dame and Louisville have sent Brent a scholarship offer, although several other schools like Michigan, Minnesota, Arkansas and Ohio State have shown varying degrees of interest.
Bud Elliott, National Recruiting Analyst: I am a big fan of Justin Brent, having seen him on film and in person. Brent has a thick build, and I suspect he’ll end up around 6’2 and 210 pounds.
Brent is an excellent combination of quickness and functional strength. He does not have good long speed, but is quick in and out of his cuts the create separation in the short and mid-levels. Brent is hard to press because of his strength as well, which allow him quick releases into his routes.
I am very impressed by Brent’s hands. They are some of the best in the class. Brent extends to catch balls above his head and below his knees. He effortlessly plucks, and is very natural catching the football. Brent’s hands are strong and he will be a reliable option on third down.
