WR Lawrence Cager leaning to Hurricanes ahead of 2015 US Army All-American Bowl decision?

The biggest factor for the Maryland product is the quarterback situation at the school of his choosing and Miami is in strong shape in that regard.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Towson (Md.) Calvert Hall wide receiver Lawrence Cager is set to make his decision on Saturday at the 2015 US Army All-American Bowl.

“I’m still contemplating and thinking over my decision in my mind. Just really thinking it over and calling my parents this week,” he told SB Nation Recruiting on Monday.

When he makes those calls, he’ll be talking about the pros and cons of Miami, Georgia, Ole Miss, Alabama and Virginia Tech, his five finalists.

The 6’5, 202-pounder said that he likes the coaching staff of the Hurricanes and has stayed in close contact with head coach Al Golden and Brennan Carroll, the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator in Coral Gables.

A relationship that Cager has been building with a Miami player may be just as important to his ultimate decision. When the Maryland product arrived in San Antonio on Sunday, he spoke with the coaching staff and also to freshman quarterback Brad Kaaya, who burst onto the national scene this season by throwing for nearly 3,200 yards and 26 touchdown passes.

In fact, Cager said that Miami jumped heavily into the mix for his services because of the Freshman All-America season turned in by Kaaya given his desire for stability at the position.

All four of the other programs Cager is considering are losing senior quarterbacks, meaning there is no long-term stability at the critical position for those schools, though the big wide receiver with excellent ball skills did say that he’s impressed with the Chad Kelly signing for Ole Miss.

Kelly, of course, is currently dealing with some legal issues after he was arrested in a late-night incident in Buffalo before Christmas that resulted in four charges against him. It’s possible that those charges could derail his Rebels career before it starts.

Virginia Tech is still in contention partly because the Hokies began recruiting Cager when he was a freshman and have been recruiting him the hardest of all the schools.

However, it seems that Kaaya’s presence in Miami will likely result in Cager donning a hat with the white, orange, and green of the U when Saturday rolls around.
