4-star cornerback Wesley Green commits to South Carolina over Georgia

The four-star defensive back has made his college choice.

Bud Elliott (SB Nation)

Wesley Green, an elite cornerback in the class of 2014, committed to the Gamecocks on Signing Day, making him part of an excellent Wednesday for Steve Spurrier and company. Green was coveted by plenty of high-profile programs throughout the country, including Georgia, Auburn, Florida, Miami, Clemson, Michigan, Ohio State, Nebraska, Ole Miss and Tennessee.

The Lithonia (Ga.) Martin Luther King High School product is 5’11 and weighs 170 pounds. His is consensus four-star prospect, per the 247Sports composite rankings, and a top-160 player nationally. He is also the No. 16 player at his position.

SB Nation’s Bud Elliott scouted Green:

Green has decent height for a cornerback at 5’10, though at just 165 pounds, he will need to add weight. His best attributes are his quickness and his instincts. He seems to always be around the football and makes a lot of plays. He has good ball skills and has a good feel for the game.

He is aggressive in coverage and it’s easy to project him being a pest at the next level thanks to his ability to quickly flip his hips. He reminds me a bit of a Tay Cody or Ronde Barber style of player, and a short zone system (cover-two, perhaps) would allow him to best use his instincts, though he’ll need to add weight to his frame.

Despite his size, Green is a willing tackler and throws his weight around, though he needs to use better form and not leave his feet so often. I’m also not sure of Green’s top speed. I don’t believe him to be slow, but he doesn’t look like a 4.4 40 player. He is probably quicker than he is fast.

His highest ranking among the major services comes from ESPN, which has him at No. 120 overall and 14th at his position. Scout considers him the No. 177 overall prospect in the nation and the 18th-best cornerback, while Rivals has him at 203rd overall and 18th at corner.

Green was originally a South Carolina commit, before reopening his recruitment in September.
