Miami Nike Football Recruit Training Camp: Cornerbacks shine

The Miami Nike Camp brought out many top prospects Sunday. Eight were rewarded with trips to The Opening.

Defensive line

Much like on the offensive line, I did not see any obvious elite players on the defensive line. Ronique Robinson, a transfer to Miami (Fla.) Booker T. Washington, is one to watch. He has an excellent build and a basketball background, but he is quite raw.

Linebacker

Unlike the group in Orlando, the linebackers in Miami had much better length overall and higher ceilings.

Tevon Coney, of Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.), was the best of the bunch. He is a consensus three-star on 247Sports as of this writing, but I expect that to rise. He appears to be about 6’1, 220, but with long arms, good flexibility and athleticism. I was impressed. He recently received offers from Auburn and UCF.

Coney will see Florida this weekend and take in some spring practices. He named Florida, Miami, N.C. State, Tennessee and Ohio State as schools who are in regular contact. Coney grew up a Florida fan, but said that his fandom cannot play into his decision process. He has previously visited Miami and spoke well of the school.

Coney would also like to see Tennessee, Georgia and Michigan State over the summer.

Other talented linebackers were also in attendance.

Sh’Mar Kilby Lane, a four-star out of Hallandale (Fla.), has a great build at 6’2 and 210 pounds with length.

Kilby Lane wants to get bigger and stronger to get ready for the season. He recently took in FSU’s junior day, and remembered that the national champions are a team that “works hard.” He also said the three schools who “show him the most love” are Alabama, Ohio State and Florida State. He’ll see Ohio State on April 12, and will visit Alabama the week after. Kilby Lane thinks he might commit after his senior season.

I was also impressed by the build of Dominic Sheppard, a three-star linebacker from Miami (Fla.) Gulliver Prep. He holds a Miami offer.

Defensive back

South Florida has long been the land of the defensive back, and Sunday provided plenty of elite players.

The best of the bunch was Tyrek Cole, a cornerback from Miramar (Fla.) High School. The Florida State commitment was extremely smooth in his transitions, effortlessly flipping his hips, showing good closing speed and contesting throws very well. He came down with two interceptions, earned the DB MVP and an invite to The Opening.

In this video interview, Cole says that he will visit Florida State and others soon. And he notes which schools will receive official visits.

Tarvarus McFadden, of Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) American Heritage School, was also excellent on the day. The uncommitted five-star has great size at 6’3, and he showed very good feet in drills -- always a question for anyone who is very tall and playing cornerback. McFadden earned an invite to The Opening at the conclusion of the camp. McFadden told me he wants to see LSU, Florida State, Georgia, Florida and maybe a few other schools during the spring or summer.

Calvin Brewton, of Miami Central, competed in his first event since shoulder surgery. The four-star Florida State safety commitment did well, and received an invite to The Opening.

Kendrell McFadden, a recent transfer to Miramar at safety, also earned an invite to The Opening. I did not expect this and did not consider him one of the elite players at the event. Other recruiting analysts were also surprised. It will be interesting to see how the West Virginia commitment matches up with the best recruits in the country.

Tyler Byrd, of Naples (Fla.), was a very impressive underclassman. The Florida Gators commitment was as physically impressive as any defensive back at the event, and though he was very grabby in coverage, he did well overall. Byrd was wearing a camouflage UF hat. He is undoubtedly one of the top 2016 prospects in the state.

Note: There were many excellent players at the camp and this review is not intended to be a complete, comprehensive rundown of every player who made a decent play on Sunday. These are just some who stood out, updated their recruitments or were otherwise noteworthy to our SB Nation Staff.
