Toby Weathersby scouting report: Athletic offensive tackle

The lean lineman is one of the most athletic tackles in the 2015 class.

Wescott Eberts (SB Nation)

Toby Weathersby is one of the top offensive linemen in the country, garnering major interest from some high-level suitors.

Weathersby attends Houston (Texas) Westfield High School, and is listed at 6’4.5 and 295 pounds. Rivals lists him as an offensive guard, while 247Sports, Scout and ESPN all consider him an offensive tackle at the next level.

Weathersby is considered a four-star prospect by 247Sports and Scout, while Rivals ranks him as a three-star and ESPN has not yet rated the prospect. Scout is highest on him, ranking him the fifth-best offensive tackle in the nation. The 247sports composite, which aggregates the ratings of all four major recruiting services, considers him a four-star, ranking him as the 15th-best offensive tackle in the nation and the 26th-best player in the state of Texas.

Weathersby claims offers from Texas, Florida, Michigan State, Oklahoma and Texas A&M, among others.

In projecting Weathersby to the next level, his height is a consideration -- 6’5 is typically the cut-off point for collegiate offensive tackle and the Westfield product is right underneath

A right and left tackle for Westfield, Weathersby carries his 300 pounds extremely well -- on film, he looks about 30 pounds lighter because there’s not a lot of obvious bad weight. And unless he has gained some bad weight since last spring when the above picture was taken, he’s still one of the more lean linemen around. Not many look good in compression gear, but Weathersby has ideal body composition to play tackle.

Already near a college-ready weight, he doesn’t appear to have a lot of experience as a pass blocker in a primarily run-based Westfield scheme, but he is athletic and capable of using his upper body strength to plant opponents once he gets them turned.

In the zone schemes that everyone runs, Weathersby is good moving laterally because of his athleticism, but can still deliver a punch on the move. When scooping to the second level, his balance, change of direction, and ability to sink and explode through defenders makes him an asset.

In terms of physical upside, Weathersby has a significant amount, as he has the flexibility to get under the pads of opposing players and the long arms and reactive body quickness needed to play in pass protection.
