JaMycal Hasty scouting report: All-purpose back with elite speed

In a crowded group of running backs in the state of Texas, the Longview (Texas) product stands out.

JaMycal Hasty is a top playmaker in the class of 2015, and the prospect is receiving some high-level interest from schools.

Hasty attends Longview (Texas) Longview High School, and is listed at 5’8 and 185 pounds. He is projected to play running back at the next level after making his collegiate choice.

He is a consensus four-star, receiving the mark from 247Sports, Rivals, Scout and ESPN. 247Sports is the service highest on him, ranking him as the sixth-best all-purpose back in the nation, while ESPN is right behind (ranking him as the eighth-best running back). The 247Sports Composite, which aggregates the ratings of all four major recruiting services, rates him as a four-star, ranking him as the fourth-best all-purpose back in the nation and the 28th-best player in the state of Texas.

Hasty claims offers from Baylor, Oregon, Texas, Houston, Oklahoma State, TCU and Texas Tech. He can be found on Twitter @TheJaMycalHasty.

The testing numbers are there for Hasty unquestionably, as he ran a 4.49 40 at a Nike event, turning in a 4.15 shuttle, and a 35.3-inch vertical leap. He has been tested as low as 4.31 in the 40 and has a run a 10.59 100m.

At the Dallas NFTC, Hasty was difficult to stop in one-on-one drills, consistently giving linebackers problems, hardly surprising since he has absolutely elite speed.

He’ll probably have to adjust to running from the shotgun in college after working from a deep position at Longview in their power-rushing offense, but he’s an ideal fit for a spread scheme because of his speed and versatility. Capable of getting behind his pads to break tackles, Hasty is difficult to bring down because of his low center of gravity and because he can cut sharply at high speed, as well as slide cut through traffic.

HIs agility is top-notch and he has excellent feet.

With 12 receptions for 255 yards and three touchdowns as a junior, Hasty is also a threat to catch the ball out of the backfield, making him a true dual-threat running back. At his size, that’s necessary, as most all-purpose backs aren’t considered big enough to handle load carries, so they need to provide other value.

If Hasty gets the ball in space in college, he’ll be a big-play threat because his speed and agility will be elite at that level, too.
