Elite 11 QB Kyler Murray visiting Oregon Ducks

Do the Ducks have a shot with the Aggie legacy?

Throughout the recruiting process, the thought has remained steady that star Allen (Texas) quarterback Kyler Murray is a lean to the Texas A&M Aggies because his father played in College Station, but the recruiting process has drawn out and Murray is now taking a visit to see the Oregon Ducks.

At the Dallas Nike Football Training Camp where Murray was the quarterback MVP and earned an invite to The Opening and the Elite 11, the nation’s No. 3 dual-threat quarterback spoke with SB Nation Recruiting about the Ducks and more.

For the 5’11, 170-pounder, the appeal of Oregon goes deeper than it does for many prospects.

“I feel that I fit the scheme well, really like the coaches,” Murray said when asked about the high-flying Ducks. “Growing up watching Oregon, everyone knows them for their gear and stuff, but the offense definitely fits me.”

It is the first trip out to Oregon for Murray, giving the Ducks an important opportunity to make an impression on the mechanically sound quarterback, who listed the school among his top five back at the end of January. The stakes for the visit are even higher than most spring trips because Murray said that he plans on committing before the start of his senior season and won’t take official visits after ending his recruitment. In other words, this may be the only chance the Ducks have to get Murray on campus, as regulations surrounding a trip like The Opening can make it difficult to combine a recruiting visit with his journey to Portland for the prestigious Nike event.

The top five for Murray also included Clemson, Florida, Texas A&M and Texas Tech. Murray didn’t have much to say when asked about the Aggies, though he did say that he keeps up with former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, with whom he has discussed how Manziel handled various situations while playing for the Aggies.

Murray also had a recent conversation with new Texas head coach Charlie Strong, saying that his impression of Strong was a positive one. However, he does not have a trip definitely planned to Austin in the near future, saying only that it is a possibility.

With no other visits currently set besides the trip out to Eugene, Oregon may have the best shot of battling Texas A&M for Murray’s upcoming pledge. But will one visit be enough?
