6 recruits invited to The Opening at Oakland Nike Football Training Camp

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Elite 11 camp on Friday in Oakland that produced four invitations to the finals and The Opening was certainly an indication of the type of talent that was on hand at the Oakland Nike Football Training Camp at Chabot College on Sunday.

In all, six prospects earned invitations to The Opening as a result of strong performances at the camp -- wide receiver Trent Irwin, offensive tackle Semisi Uluave, defensive tackles Kahlil McKenzie and Breiden Fehoko, and defensive backs Marvell Tell and Isaiah Langley.

The invitations to the two defensive tackles were hardly a surprise, as both were dominant on the day.

From Concord (Calif.) De La Salle, the 330-pound McKenzie was dominant throughout the event with his pure strength, much of it generated from his massively strong lower body. And despite weighing in at 330 pounds, McKenzie wasn’t carrying any bad weight -- he looks exactly like a defensive tackle should look.

At times, it just didn’t look fair to ask other prospects to go against him in the one-on-one drills:

It was one of the most dominating performances at a Nike Football Training Camp this year, making his invitation virtually a no-brainer. The experience should also benefit McKenzie, who tends to rely mostly on his incredible strength, but will have an opportunity to add some other tools to his arsenal out in Portland.

His defensive tackle counterpart doesn’t need much help in that regard -- if McKenzie was pure, raw strength, Texas Tech commit Breiden Fehoko was the consummate technician, showing off a seemingly endless variety of moves. And he doesn’t just have random ways of getting to the quarterback. Instead, he understands when he needs to hit a counter move to catch an offensive lineman off guard. In that regard, all of his moves complement his other moves.

Stanford defensive tackle commit Rex Manu also had a strong day.

Along the offensive line, Danville (Calif.) San Ramon Valley offensive tackle Dru Samia was good in addition to Uluave:

Rated as a consensus three-star guard, Samia showed that he has the feet and hands to play outside in college at 6’4 and made his case to have a fourth star added to his rankings.

At wide receiver, Trent Irwin benefitted from working with Elite 11 finalist Blake Barnett:

Irwin is also extremely technical with the use of his hands, even on routine catches and seems to lull defenders to sleep with his route running -- he’s not a burner with a 4.64 40, but he’s quick and understands the nuances of the position.
