SAN ANTONIO -- Despite a late run by the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Miami Hurricanes secured a commitment from Towson (Mary.) Calver Hall wide receiver Lawrence Cager during the 2015 US Army All-American Bowl at the Alamodome Saturday.
Four-star WR Lawrence Cager commits to Miami
Stability at the quarterback position helped the Hurricanes pick up the big wide receiver, who announced his commitment at the 2015 US Army All-American Bowl.
Cager also considered Georgia, Ole Miss, and Virginia Tech.
The 6’5, 202-pounder told SB Nation Recruiting he likes the coaching staff of the Hurricanes and has stayed in close contact with head coach Al Golden and Brennan Carroll, the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator in Coral Gables.
A relationship that Cager has been building with a Miami player was just as important to his ultimate decision. When the Maryland product arrived in San Antonio Sunday, he spoke with the coaching staff and also to freshman quarterback Brad Kaaya, who burst onto the national scene this season by throwing for nearly 3,200 yards and 26 touchdown passes.
In fact, Cager said Miami jumped heavily into the mix for his services because of the freshman All-America season turned in by Kaaya, given his desire for stability at the position.
All four of the other programs Cager was considering are losing senior quarterbacks, meaning there is no long-term stability at the critical position for those schools, though the big wide receiver with excellent ball skills did say he's impressed with the Chad Kelly signing for Ole Miss.
Ultimately, the presence of Kaaya in Coral Gables won out.
Cager also held offers from Arkansas, Boston College, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Duke Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan State, NC State, Nebraska, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Tennessee, Virginia, Wake Forest, Washington, and Wisconsin, among others.
A consensus four-star prospect, Cager is rated as the No. 335 player in the country, the No. 42 wide receiver, and the No. 7 player in the state of Maryland, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
The No. 19 pledge for the ‘Canes in the 2015 class, Cager’s addition will help a class that ranked. No. 21 nationally and No. 3 in the ACC prior to his commitment, according to the 247Sports Composite team rankings.
