Coming off of a big spring of Junior Day visits around the region, Alvin (Texas) Manvel safety Deontay Anderson showed out at the Dallas The Opening regional on Sunday in Arlington.
No. 3 S Deontay Anderson still intrigued by the SEC
The 2014 The Opening invitee discusses the state of his recruitment.
One of the few 2016 invitees to the The Opening last year, Anderson spoke with SB Nation Recruiting about his recent trips and the current status of his recruitment.
Anderson took in Junior Days at LSU, TCU and Texas A&M in recent weeks, coming away from College Station a big fan of new defensive coordinator John Chavis because of he “loves how he presents himself.” However, Anderson denied being an Aggie lean despite 88 percent of the predictions in his 247Sports Crystal Ball pointing toward an eventual commitment to A&M.
Like many prospects, Anderson sees a great appeal in playing for the Tigers because so many LSU defensive backs have moved on to the NFL after leaving Baton Rouge.
“You can go to LSU and that’s a great opportunity to go to the league,” he said. “Easy. It’s nothing but options and opportunity.”
Both schools have the advantage of playing in what Anderson and many others feel like is the best conference in college football -- the SEC. His affinity for that conference could make schools like Texas A&M, LSU, and Alabama difficult to beat out.
The commitment of teammate D’Eriq King to TCU, as well as the home-like atmosphere and the success of head coach Gary Patterson’s defense all weigh in favor of the Horned Frogs and ensure that TCU still has a shot with the 6’1, 193-pounder.
In the future, he'd like to take a visit to Texas. Anderson believes that the Horns will be able to turn the program around under head coach Charlie Strong and has a good relationship with Strong and defensive backs coach Chris Vaughn.
A consensus four-star prospect, Anderson is a top-40 prospect, the No. 3 safety, and the No. 6 player in Texas, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
