Iowa State announced that December commit and graduate transfer from Rhode Island Tyler Catalina would be part of the 2016 recruiting class. Except, there was only one problem: Catalina’s brother, Tony, said the report was inaccurate.

This is not accurate. Tyler has not made his final decision yet and is still reviewing all options. https://t.co/Cj2xT9BPln

So, what’s the confusion? Both Tony and Iowa State confirmed to SB Nation that Tyler had signed a non-binding financial aid agreement with the Cyclones in December. However, he has not signed a letter of intent, meaning he can still still attend another school.
NCAA rules, which typically bar schools from announcing commitments until letters of intent, do allow schools to announce commitments after financial aid agreements are signed, so this is not an NCAA violation on Iowa State’s part. However, the Cyclones did jump the gun a bit.
Tyler has received numerous offers in recent days, from Auburn, Florida, Georgia Penn State and Texas A&M, among others, according to Tony. He’s still an Iowa State commit, but he’s not bound to the Cyclones just yet.
