Alabama flipped 4-star Miami DB commit Josh Jobe. Here’s why the Tide wanted him.

Jobe is a do-everything DB.

Four-star defensive back Josh Jobe flipped his commitment from Miami to Alabama on Saturday, giving the Tide the country’s No. 13 cornerback and No. 95 overall prospect.

Jobe committed early to Miami. The 2018 prospect gave the Hurricanes a verbal pledge in the summer of 2015. In the months ahead of National Signing Day, the Canes tried hard to keep Jobe in the fold. But Alabama, it turns out, is persuasive.

Jobe is really, really good. He was a standout at The Opening Finals, a Nike-sponsored showcase for top prospects, in July. He covers like a cornerback, his official position, but he breaks on the ball like a safety. He moves to the ball so quickly that he accidentally laid out a receiver on one play in a non-contact seven-on-seven drill. He’s a classic ball hawk, the likes of which Miami’s had a lot of over the years.

Eight months before Jobe flipped to the Tide, he was talking like someone who might eventually do that. Via SEC Country:

There aren’t many more important recruits to Alabama’s class than Jobe.

“They tell me how much they need me there, and it’s not all about football at Alabama,” Jobe said. “That means a lot to me. That’s important to me.”

One thing the Tide have going for themselves is the fact that Jobe is very good friends with Alabama wide receiver commit Xavier Williams. Williams told SEC Country shortly after committing to the Tide that he wants to be the alpha dog in the Class of 2018 and help Alabama land several more elite prospects. Williams has been working Jobe ever since his commitment in January.

Michigan was in on Jobe’s recruitment, too, with a personal push coming from Jim Harbaugh. Jobe had previously played high school ball in South Florida, but he’s relocated to Connecticut this year.
