Southern Miss vs. UCF results: Knights beat Golden Eagles in 2OT, 38-31

Central Florida escaped with a victory in double overtime Saturday night against Southern Mississippi.

Central Florida was able to hold off Southern Mississippi in double overtime after a furious comeback by the Golden Eagles. Central Florida won, 38-31, but not before two overtimes and a pair of touchdown runs by Latavius Murray solidified the victory.

Regulation was the tale of two completely different halves in terms of momentum. The Knights established themselves early with a 10-0 lead, but Southern Mississippi kept it close with a touchdown by Anthony Alford.

Then, momentum shifted into the Golden Eagles’ direction. Just as UCF had done in the first half, Southern Miss won the second half battle, 17-7.

Southern Miss seemed poised for the upset when Corey Acosta forced the first overtime with a 37-yard field goal and Alford struck first for the Golden Eagles with a go-ahead touchdown run in the extra session. Then, back-to-back scores by Murray, one in the first overtime and the next in the second, propelled the Knights into the lead.

Box Score Hero: UCF quarterback Blake Bortles completed 27 of his 40 pass attempts for 272 yards. But all the touchdowns came on runs by Bortles, Murray and Storm Johnson.

Rankings Ramifications: This game shouldn’t impact the national rankings at all, but Southern Mississippi is still without a win this season.

But Did They Cover? Central Florida was a 16-point favorite, but was fortunate just to get the W in this one.
