When the Minnesota Golden Gophers travel to play Wisconsin for Paul Bunyan's Axe, they'll do so with true freshman Philip Nelson at the helm of the offense, according to a report from Phil Miller of the Star-Tribune.

The true freshman will take over for Max Shortell after back-to-back losses for Minnesota.

Dubbed the quarterback of the future for the Gophers by many, Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill has said that he’d like for Nelson to stay on the sidelines in 2012 to save a year of eligibility for the young quarterback from Mankato, Minn. However, Kill has apparently changed his mind as he is turning over the offense to Nelson after back-to-back losses to begin Big Ten conference play.
Nelson will replace Max Shortell after the sophomore completed just 9 of 19 passes for 103 yards against Northwestern, one week after throwing three interceptions in a loss to Iowa. Shortell took over in place of MarQueis Gray after an ankle injury forced Gray out of the starting lineup.
While Gray may return to the lineup on Saturday against the Badgers, it would likely be at the wide receiver position.
