LSU vs. Texas A&M halftime score: Spencer Ware might be Tigers’ best quarterback

LSU leads Texas A&M, 14-12, and is doing slightly better with 225-pound running back Spencer Ware at quarterback than it is with Zach Mettenberger.

It took LSU 26 minutes to cross midfield against a first-year SEC defense that gave up 57 points to a WAC team last week. I don’t know whether that’s better or worse than not making it past the 50 against Alabama until just a few minutes remained in the national title game, but it’s the same kind of thing.

This might be considered the definitive play of LSU’s first half:

Zach Mettenberger, like a quarter-mile past the line of scrimmage (or really just a few inches, based on his back foot), heaves one of his 11 incompletions (he's five-of-16 on the day). It must be noted he made a nice throw right before the half to take the lead, finding Kadron Boone 29 yards down the field on a sluggo route.

However, the Tigers were able to keep it within a score thanks to a defense that found its composure in the second quarter and forced two turnovers, plus a penalty-aided scoring drive that featured this neat toss to Michael Ford by big running back Spencer Ware, in at quarterback:

Certain Tigers fans have been calling for something, anything else at quarterback, as Tigers fans have been doing for approximately five years now. Based on this extensive sample size, we can agree Spencer Ware is not the worst possible option. (The worst possible option is Lee Corso’s baby alligator.)
