Auburn vs. Vanderbilt 2012 results: Commodores hold off Tigers, 17-13

The Commodores were able to stave off a last minute drive from the Tigers and win 17-13, sending Auburn to their worst start since 1952.

The 2012 season has been a nightmare for the Auburn Tigers, and the Vanderbilt Commodores were more than happy to keep it going on Saturday, winning 17-13 in Nashville. Running back Zac Stacy broke the Vanderbilt school record for rushing yards, and was the focal point for the Commodore offense, which rolled up over 200 rushing yards on the day. Even though Vandy turned the ball over three times, Auburn was unable to take advantage of those mistakes. The loss drops the Tigers to 1-6, their worst start since 1952.

Vanderbilt fumbled with just over two minutes remaining in the game, and Auburn recovered at their own 32 yard line. They moved the ball into Vanderbilt territory, but were unable to convert on a 4th and 13 with 57 seconds remaining.

Auburn was without tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen injury, who missed the game with an undisclosed injury and may be out for the rest of the season. Had he played, things may have gone a bit more smoothly for the Tigers offense. Without him, they struggled mightily to throw the ball. Clint Moseley started at quarterback, and while he completed 70% of his passes, the Tigers were unable to find any consistency. They also struggled on third downs, converting only one out of ten chances.

Tre Mason was the Tigers' best player, racking up 84 rushing yards and a touchdown. Emory Blake was Auburn's leading receiver with four catches for 47 yards.

Box Score Hero: Zac Stacy had 27 rushes for 163 yards and a touchdown, and became the all-time leading rusher in Vanderbilt football history. Quite a day for him.

Rankings Ramifications: Neither team was ranked coming into the game, and neither will be afterwards.

But did they cover? The Commodores were 6.5 point favorites entering the game, so they did not cover the spread.
