Miami cancels future football series with Memphis

The University of Miami has altered its future schedule, canceling a series with the Memphis Tigers.

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

The Miami Hurricanes have canceled a home-and-home series that had been scheduled with Memphis for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. According to Barry Jackson at the Miami Herald, the series felt "pointless to play."

While Miami is not exactly contending for the national title, Memphis has really struggled this season. The Tigers are 1-6, and their only victory came in a close game with Rice University. Memphis currently averages just 18.1 points per game, which is third-worst in Conference USA.

Miami’s future schedule is further complicated by Notre Dame’s recent commitment to play five ACC opponents per season. The Hurricanes and the Irish agreed to a home-and-home series back in 2010 that was to take place in 2016 and 2017. It is unclear if that matchup will take place given Notre Dame’s new agreement with the ACC.

The Miami Hurricanes are currently 4-4, with a 3-2 record in the ACC. They are off this week, and return to action on Nov. 1 against Virginia Tech.
