Cincinnati Bearcats defensive end Walter Stewart suffered an acute spinal fracture against the Fordham Rams on Oct. 13th. While undergoing tests for that injury, it was discovered that he was born without a posterior C1 arch in his spine, and will have to retire from football as a result. Stewart is expected to be added to the Cincinnati coaching staff by head coach Butch Jones, but no move has been announced as of yet.

Cincinnati Bearcats defensive end Walter Stewart has retired from football due to a spinal defect discovered earlier this fall.

Stewart, a 6’5”, 249 lb senior from Ashville, OH, had 22 tackles, seven tackles for a loss, and four sacks through six games in 2012. During his four year career as a linebacker and defensive end for the Bearcats, he has 185 tackles, 34.5 tackles for a loss, 16.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles, an interception, and a touchdown. There was a good chance that Stewart would get the chance to play football in the NFL, but that is no longer possible.
