Dorial Green-Beckham arrested, suspended: Mizzou’s depth chart damage

Top freshman Dorial Green-Beckham was arrested for marijuana possession Wednesday night and will miss this week’s game against Vanderbilt, along with fellow freshmen Torey Boozer and Levi Copelin.

Missouri freshmen Dorial Green-Beckham, Torey Boozer and Levi Copelin were arrested for marijuana possession Wednesday night and have each been suspended for one game. The Tigers have Vanderbilt this week in the long-anticipated James Franklin Bowl.

Franklin, the Mizzou quarterback, will be without his most athletic weapon. DGB, the nation’s No. 1 recruit this cycle, has shown flashes in this young season, getting at least one touch in all five games so far. He scored his first touchdown last week, against UCF on an 80-yard catch-and-run. He has 147 yards on 11 total touches so far.

His loss isn't as devastating as it might sound, as he's still getting his feet wet. He ranks just fourth on the team in receiving yards and sixth in catches. Still, he made for a frightening weapon that defenses had to spend time accounting for. This means more direct attention for top catchers T.J. Moe and Marcus Lucas.

Behind DGB on the most recent depth chart was fellow freshman Sean Culkin, who’s also enormous (he’s 6’5, 232 pounds and was considered a tight end by many recruiting analysts), but broke his hand and was supposed to redshirt this year. The more likely bet is Bud Sasser, a sophomore with seven career catches and appearances in 12 games.

As for the other two arrestees, Copelin and Boozer have yet to record playing time. Both were expected to redshirt.

Bill Connelly at Rock M Nation reacts with slightly muted frustration:

Honestly, I cannot get as worked up about this as I should -- there is marijuana usage on every football team in the country -- but ... ugh. A) I am not enjoying the 2012 season. B) Come on, DGB, you have a larger spotlight on you than most, and you really don’t want to go down this road. C) Really? You guys were just sitting in a car?
