Georgia vs. Auburn 2012 results: Bulldogs clinch SEC East, blank Tigers

Keith Marshall and Georgia romped through Auburn for 38 points and nearly 500 yards of offense to keep the Bulldogs in the SEC title hunt.

Behind three touchdowns from Aaron Murray and 100-yard-plus performances from Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall, No. 5 Georgia blew out hapless Auburn, 38-0. The win, coupled with Alabama's loss to Texas A&M, could conceivably make the Bulldogs the top-ranked SEC team in the nation, but the big news is the Dawgs have played their way into their second straight SEC title game appearance.

Georgia (9-1, 7-1) had no trouble at all with the Tigers (2-8, 0-7), scoring on its first four drives of the game en route to the victory. The first three drives all ended with Murray throwing for a touchdown, each to a different receiver, and Gurley capped the scoring in the first half with a six-yard run in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs kept piling on the points in the third quarter, with a field goal and a 62-yard run from Marshall. It was the running back’s first score since he found the endzone twice in the Sep. 29 shootout against Tennessee.

Auburn’s offense found no holes in Georgia’s defense, managing only 11 first downs and 55 yards on the ground. Jonathan Wallace threw for 181 yards, put was picked off on the Tigers’ final drive of the third quarter. Auburn also lost a fumble deep in Georgia territory in the third quarter on their best and only scoring opportunity of the game.

Box Score Hero: Murray had little trouble with Auburn’s secondary. He was 9-of-9 in the first quarter for 71 yards and two scores, and finished the game 18-of-24 with 208 yards and three touchdowns.

Rankings Ramifications: With No. 1 Alabama falling from the ranks of the unbeaten, Georgia will likely rise at least a spot from its No. 5 ranking.

But Did They Cover? Georgia was favored by 16 points, so it’s safe to say that anyone betting on the Bulldogs got what they were looking for.
