UTEP coaching search: Dan Hawkins, Dave Yost in the running?

Three names have been mentioned as possible candidates to fill the head coaching void left at UTEP by the retirement of Mike Price.

Doug Pensinger

Just one day after news that Mike Price will retire from his position as head coach of the UTEP Miners, Dan Hawkins, David Yost and Brian Polian are the three names that have surfaced as potential replacements, according to Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports.

Hawkins, 52, served as head coach at Willamette University before he joined the Boise State Broncos. After three seasons as an assistant, Hawkins took over as head coach of the Broncos and led the team to four consecutive WAC titles before he was hired as the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes. That tenure wasn't nearly as successful, and Hawkins was fired during his fifth season with the team in November 2010. He has served as a studio analyst for ESPN since.

While Hawkins has many years of head coaching experience, David Yost has yet to hold the position. Yost, 42, has been an assistant coach for the Missouri Tigers since the 2001 season. After eight seasons as a recruiting coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Yost was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2009. During his time as coach, Yost has groomed quarterbacks such as Chase Daniel, Brad Smith and Blaine Gabbert.

Polian, 37, is another that has never had a head coaching position. He served as the special teams coordinator for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Stanford Cardinal before joining the Texas A&M Aggies for the 2012 season with the same position. Since the 2005 season, Polian has coached five teams that finished seasons with BCS Bowl appearances and could have a sixth with the Aggies in 2012.

The UTEP Miners are 3-8 in 2012 and the team will finish its season on Saturday against the Rice Owls.
