Cal football coaching search: Chris Petersen, Greg Roman potential candidates

Boise State head coach Chris Petersen and San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman could be among potential candidates to replace Jeff Tedford at Cal.

With Jeff Tedford out at Cal, the eventual discussion starts to turn to who comes next for the Golden Bears. Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports files this report that lists a bevy of potential candidates. Potential names the school might consider, according to Feldman, include:

Boise State’s Chris Petersen; San Jose State’s Mike MacIntyre; former Stanford assistant and current 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman; Cincinnati Bengal assistant Hue Jackson; Louisiana Tech’s Sonny Dykes; Utah State’s Gary Andersen; Western Kentucky’s Willie Taggart and Fresno State’s Tim DeRuyter.

Texas OC Bryan Harsin, Utah State coach Gary Anderson, Alabama OC Doug Nussmeier and former Oregon coach Mike Bellotti have also appeared in the rumor mill.

Obviously the most intriguing candidate is Petersen. He’s the most accomplished coach on the list, and has accumulated an incredible record during his tenure at Boise State. Feldman says that a source has Cal and Oregon being the two jobs that Petersen would ever really consider, which makes you think that the Bears have at least a puncher’s chance. However, Petersen has received offers from UCLA (when Rick Neuheisel was fired) and Stanford (when Jim Harbaugh went to the NFL) before, and has turned them both down.

The other top-notch possibility is Roman, who is working wonders with the 49ers offense with Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick at quarterback. His Bay Area connections will definitely be a potential factor here.
