Virginia vs. Virginia Tech 2012 results: Hokies win ugly Commonwealth Cup

Cody Journell’s 29-yard field goal led Virginia Tech to a 17-14 win over Virginia.

Cody Journell drilled a 29-yard field goal as time expired as the Virginia Tech Hokies defeated the Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday, 17-14.

Logan Thomas accounted for both of Virginia Tech's touchdowns. Thomas connected with Randall Dunn on a 7-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, giving the Hokies their first lead of the day. Thomas added a 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, tying the game up at 14-14.

Thomas was far from perfect, though. The Hokie was just 18-of-38 passing for 129 yards.

Virginia took the lead in the third quarter when Eli Harold sacked Thomas, forcing a fumble. Brent Urban recovered the fumble and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown, giving the Cavaliers a 14-7 lead.

Virginia Tech’s defense held the Cavaliers to just 30 yards on the ground, and held the Cavaliers to 1.5 yards-per-carry average. The Hokies, meanwhile, rushed the ball 57 times for 174 yards. Thomas led the team with 89 yards on the ground.

The two teams combined to punt 18 times, with each team punting nine times.

Box Score Hero: Logan Thomas’ two touchdowns and 129 yards passing, along with 89 rushing yards, was the game’s impact player.

Rankings Ramifications: Neither team will factor into next week’s rankings.

But Did They Cover? Virginia Tech entered the game as 10 point favorites, and failed to cover.
