Just days after firing Gene Chizik, the Auburn Tigers are wasting little time in the search for a new head football coach and have four targets in mind, according to Charles Goldberg of AL.com.
Auburn coaching candidates: 4 names reportedly in the running
Jimbo Fisher, Gus Malzahn, Bobby Petrino and Gary Patterson are all potential candidates for the Auburn head coaching job, according to a report.
Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher, Arkansas State coach Gus Malzahn, TCU coach Gary Patterson and former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino are the four coaches that are reportedly in the running, three of whom have experience with Auburn.
Fisher, Malzahn and Petrino each served as assistant coaches at Auburn during their coaching careers, while Patterson is the only one without Auburn or SEC experience. Malzahn was the offensive coordinator during the 2010 season that resulted in a BCS Championship before accepting the Arkansas State head coaching job in December 2011.
Petrino is the sole candidate of the four that isn’t currently coaching after he was fired by Arkansas in April 2012 after admitting to having an affair with a university employee. According to Goldberg, the Auburn search committee is in the process of calling people in athletics for more information about Petrino.
Goldberg also mentions Boise State’s Chris Petersen and Louisville’s Charlie Strong as names on the working list of candidates.
