Washington vs. Cal results: Huskies hang on for 21-13 win

The Washington Huskies improved to 5-4 on the season with a 21-13 win against the California Golden Bears Friday night.

Ezra Shaw

The Washington Huskies scored 14 unanswered points in the second half to knock off the California Golden Bear, 21-13.

Washington wen't up 7-0 in the first quarter, but Cal scored the next 13 points to take a 13-7 lead in the third quarter. Thanks in part to two outstanding catches from Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Washington answered with a touchdown to re-take the lead on its next drive. Seferian-Jenkins had a huge game for the Huskies, catching eight passes for 151 yards and a touchdown.

Cal had opportunities to take the lead back in the second half, but were unable to capitalize with points. Washington put the game away late with Bishop Sankey capping the scoring with his second touchdown of the game. Sankey finished with 189 rushing yards and two scores. The Bears mounted one final drive and moved the ball into Washington territory, but a fourth-and-5 pass attempt fell incomplete.

Neither team played an especially clean game as both teams committed four turnovers. California played without leading receiver Keenan Allen due to a shoulder injury and lost quarterback Zach Maynard late in the fourth quarter due to an apparent knee injury.

With the win, Washington now has a four-game winning streak against California. The loss drops Cal to 3-7 and seals its second losing season in the last three years.

Box Score Hero: Bishop Sankey and Austin Seferian-Jenkins led the way for Washington. Sankey rushed for 189 yards and two touchdowns while Seferian-Jenkins caught eight passes for 151 yards and a touchdown. C.J. Anderson had a big game for Cal, rushing for 164 yards.

Rankings Ramifications: Neither team entered the game in the ranking discussion and Washington isn’t likely to enter the rankings despite the win.

But Did They Cover? California entered as a 4-point favorite, but failed to cover with the loss.
