TCU vs. West Virginia 2012 final score: Frogs upset ‘Eers in double OT

Josh Boyce hauled in six passes as he accumulated 180 yards receiving and two touchdowns for TCU. His second touchdown was a 94-yarder with 1:28 remaining that tied the game and eventually forced an overtime.

The TCU Horned Frogs managed to earn an upset victory over the No. 21 West Virginia Mountaineers with a double overtime victory that featured a gutsy call to go for two rather than elect to kick a game-tying extra point to send the game to a third overtime. Brandon Carter completed the two-point attempt to Josh Boyce to give TCU a 39-38 victory after review, though the call remains questionable:

While it was the Mountaineers that earned a 21-14 lead in the first half, the Horned Frogs began a rally despite turning the ball over twice. A fumble by Tucker set up a 52-yard field goal for Tyler Bitancurt of the Mountaineers and Trevone Boykin threw an interception in the end zone that would have given TCU the lead. They were the beneficiaries of a turnover too, though, as an attempt to field a poor snap on a punt turned into a fumble that was recovered by TCU's Dominic Merka and returned for a 15-yard touchdown.

After a 26-yard field goal by Jaden Oberkrom field goal early in the fourth quarter tied the score, the West Virginia offense continued to struggle in the second half. Austin bailed out the offense, though, by giving them a 76-yard punt return for a touchdown that appeared to be the game winner.

The Horned Frogs were unable to score on the ensuing possession, but when they managed to stop the WVU offense, they were afforded one more opportunity to tie the game. After a sack backed TCU to their own six-yard line, Boykin found Boyce for a 94-yard game-tying touchdown with just 1:28 remaining and eventually forced the game to overtime.

In the first overtime period, Oberkrom missed a field goal attempt wide right, but was bailed out by the TCU defense as they blocked a field goal attempt by Bitancurt. In the second overtime, Smith struck quickly with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Stedman Bailey.

TCU responded right away with a double reverse that featured wide receiver Brandon Carter throwing to Corey Fuller for a touchdown, but instead of electing to kick the tying extra point, the Horned Frogs instead went for two.

Box Score Hero: Josh Boyce hauled in six passes as he accumulated 180 yards receiving and two touchdowns for TCU. His second touchdown was a 94-yarder with 1:28 remaining that tied the game and eventually forced an overtime.

Rankings Ramifications: The Mountaineers entered the game as the No. 21 team in the BCS standings and will likely fall from the rankings with a third consecutive loss. The Horned Frogs did not receive any votes in the AP poll, so it is unlikely that they earn a spot in the BCS rankings, but they will likely earn some votes.

But Did They Cover? West Virginia was favored by four points over TCU and did not cover, as the Horned Frogs managed to score a touchdown in overtime and earn a one-point victory.

Next Week’s Schedule: The Mountaineers will next travel to face the No. 24 Oklahoma State Cowboys, while TCU will head back home and host the No. 2 Kansas State Wildcats.
