Boise State nose tackle Mike Atkinson has played his last game for the Broncos. The senior tore his ACL in last Saturday’s 21-19 home loss to San Diego State, coach Chris Petersen confirmed on Monday.
Mike Atkinson injury: Boise State career done for top NT
Boise State senior nose tackle Mike Atkinson tore his ACL in last weekend’s loss to San Diego State and will miss the rest of the season.
Anchoring an otherwise young defensive line, Atkinson had racked up 37 tackles with 2 forced fumbles and an interception return for a touchdown for the Broncos’ defense. That TD was the Broncos’ lone score in a 7-6 win over BYU in September.
Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe is expected to slide over to the nose tackle spot to take Atkinson's place, while Darrin Koontz is also expected to help fill the void. Boise State (7-2, 4-1 Mountain West) is on the road to face Hawaii this weekend.
Boise State all of a sudden finds itself with thinning depth on defense. Starting safety Lee Hightower could miss a third straight game this weekend for violating team rules. DT Greg Grimes and nickelback Dextrell Simmons are both listed as questionable with injuries.
