Oft-starting QB Michael Rocco leaving Virginia football

Virginia Cavaliers semi-starting quarterback Michael Rocco was granted his release from the school, and will transfer next season.

Peter Casey-US PRESSWIRE

University of Virginia starting quarterback Michael Rocco will not return to Virginia next season, the school announced on Saturday.

Rocco finished the 2012 season completing 60.5 percent of his passes for 1,917 yards, while throwing for 13 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. Rocco started for the Cavaliers in 2011 as well, completing 60.7 percent of his passes for 2,671 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Sophomore quarterback Phillip Sims attempted 203 passes this season, just 63 fewer than Rocco attempted. Sims completed 56.2 percent of his passes, throwing for 1,263 yards and nine touchdowns.

Rocco asked for and received his release from Virginia, and will attempt to transfer to a school where he can sit out 2013, and then start in 2014.

It’s currently unknown what schools Rocco is interested in transferring to.

Virginia finished the season with a 4-8 record in 2012, with the tag-team duo of Rocco and Sims at quarterback. Rocco’s final game with the Cavaliers was a 17-14 loss to Virginia Tech -- a game in which Rocco completed 14-of-29 passes for 177 yards, with a touchdown and interception.
