Pac-12 not expanding, but Boise State, San Diego State potential future considerations

Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott does not plan to expand the conference, but he did not rule anything out.

It seems like just about every school in the nation has switched conferences sometime in the last few years. The Pac-12 added Colorado and Utah about 18 months ago, and every program involved has already felt the competitive and financial impact due to a new scheduling format and a lucrative media deal.

As Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said on Friday, he does not expect the conference to expand anytime soon. At the same time though, Scott also said he has learned to “never say never”, and that expansion talks could pick up at a future date.

“We feel great about the makeup of our conference at 12 teams. At this stage, I see no reason to go beyond 12 teams,” Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said Friday before the league championship game between Stanford and UCLA. “For a lot of reasons, this is where we want to be for the foreseeable future.”

Scott responded to a question about Boise State and San Diego State:

“When we expanded in the past we looked at them because they are prominent schools in the West, with very strong athletics programs, in markets we are not in,” Scott said. “There’s a lot of criteria that we looked at last time, that I’m sure we’d look at again.

“If we were to look at expanding again, I’m sure both those schools would be on the list. But, we don’t have any plans.”

Both schools are set to leave for the Big East, which is currently in the midst of collapsing. It seems that both the Broncos and Aztecs would undoubtedly accept a Pac-12 offer, although there’s no reason to believe they’ll get them anytime soon.
