Kansas vs. West Virginia 2012 results: Mountaineers cruise

West Virginia ended its regular season with a modest two-game winning streak, courtesy of a 59-10 demolition of visiting Kansas on Saturday.

The West Virginia Mountaineers made quick work of the visiting Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday, jumping out to leads of 21-0 and 35-7 at halftime before eventually prevailing, 59-10, at Mountaineer Field.

In his final home game at West Virginia, Geno Smith was an almost-perfect 23 of 24 passing for 407 yards and three touchdowns. Two of Smith's wide receivers topped 100 yards, with Stedman Bailey catching 11 balls for 159 yards and two touchdowns, and Tavon Austin hauling in 4 passes for 110 yards.

West Virginia also steamrolled the Jayhawks on the ground, amassing 240 yards on 46 carries. Andrew Buie rushed for 100 yards, and Austin carried the ball 12 times for 77 yards and a score.

Box Score Hero: Despite Austin’s brilliance both running and catching the ball, the senior Smith gets the nod here. He finished the regular season completing better than 70 percent of his passes, with 40 touchdowns and just six interceptions.

Rankings Ramifications: Neither team entered the game ranked, and despite the modest two-game winning streak to end the regular season, the Mountaineers likely will not be ranked entering bowl season.

But Did They Cover? The Mountaineers, 21.5-point favorites, had the spread covered before halftime and the game was never really in doubt.

Next Week’s Schedule: This is the final regular season game for both West Virginia and Kansas. The Jayhawks will not be going to a bowl game, but West Virginia will be, and will find out which bowl on Sunday evening. Currently, SB Nation is projecting the Mountaineers to square off against familiar foe Pittsburgh in the Pinstripe Bowl.
