College football player’s racist Barack Obama tweet gets him kicked off team

I’d mostly like to learn more about uninvited walk-ons. Is that like auditing football?

Bradley Patterson was an "uninvited walk-on long snapper" for Division II North Alabama's football team, which sounds like just about the least impactful college football player possible. He also tweeted at @2A_HogOfTheYear.

Past tense for both of those, as both things are no more. A racist tweet by Patterson (“Take that nigger off the tv, we wanna watch football”) during Barack Obama’s Sunday night address was instantly publicized by Deadspin, and voila:

According to Reddit, here’s the blow-by-blow:

I was following this as it all went down. First he took the initial tweet down. Then he posted one saying he hadn’t even had his phone for three days and hadn’t been tweeting.

Then he deleted that one, deleted anything at all offensive, and posted a half-hearted apology.

Then he just deleted his account. About two hours later, the official twitter account of North Alabama confirms he’s off the team. Way to go, kid.

Dredging up examples of the worst behavior we can find on Twitter has never seemed like critical work to me, but in this case it’s resulted in a very immediate lesson for somebody, so that’s something?
