Paul Haynes reportedly will be Kent State’s new head coach

Former Arkansas and Ohio State defensive coordinator Paul Haynes is the new head coach of the Kent State Golden Flashes.

Arkansas defensive coordinator Paul Haynes is set to take over the Golden Flashes, according to Cleveland.com.

Kent State has found its next head coach to replace Darrell Hazell, hiring a man very familiar with him. Haynes has spent the previous seven seasons at Ohio State in charge of the defensive backs, coaching alongside Hazell (who was Ohio State’s assistant head coach for most of those years).

Haynes is a Kent State guy. He started in campus in 1987 as a walk-on, then played four years in five seasons (sidelined one season with an injury). He led the team in interceptions as a freshman, then led the team in tackles as a sophomore. After missing a season with injury, Haynes played the final two seasons, finishing seventh all time in tackles with the Golden Flashes.

Haynes has been coaching for nearly two decades. He was a graduate assistant at Bowling Green, a secondary coach at Ferris State, a running back/secondary coach at Northern Iowa, a defensive backs coach at Kent State, a quality control assistant with the Jaguars and then primarily coached secondary for the rest of the decade with Louisville, Michigan State and Ohio State.
