Cal will interview Kent State head coach Darrell Hazell for its vacant head football coach position Sunday, according to Brett McMurphy of ESPN. The interview comes the day after Hazell’s Golden Flashes suffered a 44-37 overtime loss to Northern Illinois in the MAC Championship Game.

The former Jim Tressel assistant has been floated as a candidate for a number of coaching vacancies.

Hazell is one of the hottest commodities in coaching. In 2011, he took over a Kent State program that had not finished a season with a winning record since 2001 and had never won more than nine games. In two seasons, he had the Golden Flashes at 11-1, set a school record for wins, and won the MAC East Division for the first time in program history.
Prior to taking the Kent State job, Hazell spent seven years on Jim Tressel’s staff at Ohio State, the final six as assistant head coach and wide receivers coach. He also had assistant coaching stints at Rutgers, West Virginia, Army and Western Michigan. He does not have any experience on the west coast.
Cal fired longtime head coach Jeff Tedford after a 3-9 season that ended with a 62-14 loss to Oregon State.
