James Franklin, Vanderbilt agree to new contract

Vanderbilt have given head football coach James Franklin a new contract, which includes commitments to make improvements to the stadium and team facilities, days after the coach told SB Nation’s Steven Godfrey he’d like to stay in Nashville.

Vanderbilt and head football coach James Franklin have agreed to a new contract, the parameters of which have not been disclosed. Franklin just finished his second season as the coach of the Commodores, and has guided Vanderbilt to consecutive bowl games for the first time in program history. The ‘Dores will stay home to play in the Music City Bowl, which will be held on Dec. 31 at LP Field in Nashville.

The Commodores won eight games this season for the first time since 1982, and the 14 wins over Franklin’s first two seasons are the most for a Vanderbilt head coach in over a century. Part of Franklin’s new deal are provisions for facility and stadium improvements, as Vanderbilt seems to be making a visible commitment to the football program’s future.

Before coming to Vanderbilt, Franklin was the offensive coordinator at Maryland, and was the coach-in-waiting in College Park under Ralph Friedgen before making the move to Nashville.
