The favorite classes of college football stars

Kenjon Barner and Jarvis Jones have figured out what this school thing’s all about.

Steve Dykes

College football players go to class. This is not an easy thing for some of our brethren to admit, but it’s true. Probably even at UNC sometimes.

Many of them have preferred classes. Bill Speros has a fine collection of star players talking about their favorite collegiate academic experiences, which you should go read.

Collin Klein's is even more wholesome and aw-shucksity than you're expecting, and of course the Texas A&M one incorporates the military in a way no one really saw coming. Jonathan Cooper, a 295-pound monster of a guard, saying, "I fancy myself a thespian," is worth the price of admission, but the real lessons here are to be gleaned from Kenjon Barner and Jarvis Jones, each of whom took classes in which they were overwhelmingly outnumbered by females.

That’s not even a, “hee hee lots of girlfriends,” thing. That’s simply the way to go through college. In my experience at least (English major in a land without male English majors), women take group projects more seriously, do more talking in class, and are more willing to help fellow students. And any time you’re outnumbered 40-to-1, you stand a good chance of becoming a locally beloved mascot, if you play your cards right.

All of this is to say Todd McShay has grave character concerns about Barner and Jones avoiding intense masculine competition by surrounding themselves with non-men.
