The search for the next Tennessee Volunteers coach continues, with Mike Gundy, Butch Davis and Bret Bielema as the latest names being linked to the school, with varying degrees of confidence.
Tennessee coaching rumors: Mike Gundy, Bret Bielema among latest rumors
At least three more coaches, including OSU’s Mike Gundy and Wisconsin’s Bret Bielema, have been linked to the Tennessee coaching search.
Gundy has been the head coach at Oklahoma State since 2005, leading the Cowboys to a 10-1 record and a Fiesta Bowl win in 2011. OSU is just 7-5 in 2012, however, and GoVolsXtra is reporting that Gundy has spoken with Tennessee about the vacant coaching position.
Adam Hoge of CBS has reported that Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema has also been in touch with Tennessee, though this was questioned from the Knoxville side. The Badgers are headed to the Rose Bowl after decimating No. 12 Nebraska in the Big Ten Championship on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Pete Roussel of CoachingSeach.com has reported that UNC head coach Butch Davis could also be on the list of coaching candidates for Tennessee.
Tennessee fired coach Derek Dooley on Nov. 18 following a 41-18 loss to Vanderbilt the day before. The Volunteers finished the season with a 5-7 record (1-7 in the SEC) and will now be looking for the team’s fourth head coach since 2008.
