Update: One recruit says Larry Fedora’s made it clear UNC won’t lose its head coach.

North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora is a serious candidate to become the next head coach at the University of Tennessee, as multiple sources have confirmed the first-year Tar Heels head coach interviewed with the Volunteers in New York City late Tuesday.

Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart is among many coaches and administrators in New York for the National Football Foundation awards dinner as well as the induction of former UT head coach Phil Fulmer and 16 others into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Multiple media reports have included Fedora as part of a three-name list of final candidates for the position, including Louisville head coach Charlie Strong and Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy.

Fedora guided the Tar Heels to a 8-4 record in his first season in Chapel Hill. North Carolina is ineligible for postseason play this season as part of a three-year probation following impermissible benefits given to players under former head coach Butch Davis. Fedora came to UNC after four years at Southern Mississippi that included a 2011 C-USA Championship. His overall record as a head coach is 42-23.
