Wisconsin will not hire Paul Chryst as their next head coach, athletic director Barry Alvarez said in a press conference announcing that he would be the interim head coach for the team’s Rose Bowl appearance.

Barry Alvarez said that Paul Chryst is out of the running for the Wisconsin head coaching job, as the former Badgers offensive coordinator will remain at Pittsburgh.

Chryst had served as offensive coordinator under Bret Bielema from 2005 to 2011 before leaving to take the head coaching job at Pitt. He was widely reported to be Wisconsin’s No. 1 target for the vacant head coaching job after Bielema left Wisconsin to take the job at Arkansas on Tuesday. The Panthers were desperate to hold onto a head coach after Todd Graham left the program for Arizona State just a year after accepting the head job, and Chryst’s contract had a $6 million buyout.
Alvarez said that he played an instrumental role in ensuring Chryst was able to land the Pitt job in the first place, and that the coach would not be returning to Wisconsin. The athletic director won’t be the team’s full-time coach, but answered the call to coach the team on an interim basis for the Rose Bowl appearance.
